Varanasi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth — and for thousands of years, its ghats have faced open water and open sky. That makes it a surprisingly wonderful place to look up. This guide covers where to stargaze in and around Varanasi, the best time of year, and what you can realistically expect to see.
Why Varanasi is special for stargazing
The ghats along the Ganga give you a rare thing in an Indian city: a wide, unobstructed horizon. Looking east across the river, there are no tall buildings breaking the skyline. Early mornings and clear winter nights can offer genuinely good views of the Moon and bright planets, even from within the city.
Best places to stargaze near Varanasi
- The ghats at dawn or late night — Assi Ghat and quieter southern ghats offer open sky over the river when the crowds thin out.
- Rooftops away from the old city — the higher and darker, the better.
- Just outside the city — a short drive toward rural Uttar Pradesh dramatically reduces light pollution and reveals far more stars.
Wherever you go, the two enemies of stargazing are light pollution and clouds. Bright planets and the Moon cut through both; faint stars and the Milky Way need dark, clear skies.
Best time of year
The cooler, drier months from October to March generally offer the clearest, most stable skies in Varanasi. The monsoon (roughly June–September) brings cloud cover that makes viewing unpredictable. Around a new moon, the sky is darkest and best for fainter objects; a few days either side of first quarter is ideal for viewing the Moon itself, when shadows reveal its craters.
What you can see
Even from a city sky, a modest telescope will show you the Moon's craters and mountains, Saturn's rings, Jupiter with its four largest moons, and bright star clusters. Under darker skies outside the city, constellations, the Milky Way, and deep-sky objects come into view.
